People Like You
Mental health issues are not something often understood in Chinese communities in New Zealand. This could be because of lack of information, or stereotypes and myths surrounding mental illness. As a result, people do not seek help, or even think that recovery is impossible.
Research has consistently shown that one of the most effective strategies in countering stigma and discrimination is ‘contact', or meaningful interaction between people with experience of mental illness and those without. In this way, myths can be broken down, resulting in less fear and anxiety around mental illness and those who experience it.
People Like You provides a range of stories about Chinese people who experience mental illness. Through these stories we hope you will find inspiration, hope and love.
We also hope by doing this we can encourage people from Chinese communities to seek help early on, and provide insight into how to get support from mental health services.
